Burton’s Southern roots, particularly in Georgia and Florida, run deep.
His beliefs in hard work and education are a product of his solid
upbringing in McAlpin, a North central Florida farm community.

Burton’s family also has ties to Valdosta, Ga. For instance,
Burton’s great-great grandfather, Dekalb Calvin Fletcher, enlisted
there in the Confederate States of America Army and later fought in
the Civil War.
In addition, Emma Lillian Geiger Hunter, Burton’s maternal
grandmother, had to work in the Valdosta cotton mills starting at
age nine! Her father passed away, and she had to help support the
family, making fifty cents a day. Lillian’s strong work ethic has
been passed down through the generations. |

Burton enjoys
researching genealogy, and he has traced his family back to
its American roots. His research primarily covers four family
surnames: Fletcher, Mobley, Hunter, and Geiger. (Burton’s
paternal grandparents were Burton Eugene Fletcher and Ethel
Mobley, and his maternal grandparents were Gus Esco Hunter Sr.
and Emma Lillian Geiger.) |
