While touring South Georgia churches and cemeteries in the area of Moultrie,
something unique caught my eye. So I pulled my car off the highway into the Pleasant Grove
Primitive Baptist Church, turned off the ignition, walked to the cemetery, and looked with
amazement at an elephant sized and shaped memorial. This large behemoth with his head
raised high and his trunk curled in the air seemed to be asking, "Where are the
peanuts?"
Perhaps this was a work for someones child, I thought, as I approached the memorial.
Perhaps someone loved the circus. I approached closer to admire the work.
The memorial honors William F. Dugan, a circus owner, born January 18, 1999, and who died
December 22, 1950, three days before my own birth on December 25, 1950. While I obviously
never knew the man, I admire his heirloom memorial that will bring smiles to folks and
will forever remind folk that Mr. Dugan was the circus man.
Clearly, as this memorial expresses, memorials do not have to be sad. Mr. Dugans
occupation made children and adults smile, so it was only natural that the memorial for
his memorialization should make people smile.
With modern technology, and the skilled hands of our artisans, we can build amazing
memorials. Do you have a horse, dog, cat, or even an elephant you would like to honor?
Perhaps you may wish to honor your best friend with a memorial.
Will your memorial be just as unique in telling your story? We can help you be just as
creative to build you something distinctive, which fittingly tells your story.
When you have an opportunity, stop by The Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church and pay
your respects to the Dugan family. Leave a few peanuts for the elephant. Im certain
the Dugan family would see the humor and appreciate the gesture of goodwill.
