The Memorialist: Memorials Designed As Tree Trunks

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2006-01

If you have visited an old cemetery, you have probably observed one or more monuments designed as a tree trunk. The designs of the Woodmen of the World fraternal organization and insurance company, founded in 1890, are common. See http://www.woodmen.com for the history of Woodmen of the World.

Other monuments not affiliated as promotional tools for that organization are really unique. These monuments are full of symbolism and beauty. Whether upright, perpendicular, leaning, with a book on top of a tree trunk, or with a fractured top, similar to a broken pillar, the tree offers the symbolism of a short or interrupted life.

These designs probably reflect the connection many of our ancestors had with the forests, as many were woodmen in the spirit of Paul Bunyan the giant lumberjack. For someone who enjoyed forestry, hunting, fishing, camping, or the outdoors in general, this is a design that would set them apart from most others in the cemetery and would express their individuality.

We can add pertinent information on one side and an epitaph on the other side of the memorial, with or without an etching, photograph or family history plaque.

Perhaps there was an old oak tree that you enjoyed swinging from as a child? With photographs, we can create a monument that closely resembles the original tree. Big or small, short or tall, we can do amazing things with stone. Share your photos and your ideas with us and let’s see how we can achieve a marvelous memorial by working together. Our creative design team can create original, imaginative and inspired designs; so let’s work together to memorialize your loved ones!
