The Memorialist: Do You Know The Difference Between Scotia, Nosing, Wash, Margin and Rock Pitch?

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-12

When I first started studying monument terminology, the terms were flowing out of my ears like a foreign language. Monument builders definitely use a foreign language that is not familiar to everyone, so here is another review.

When I built my memorial, I used scotia with nosing on the bottom of the tablet. This is a nice feature that I obviously like a lot. A scotia is defined as any molding with a concave cut, concave being shaped like the inner portion of a circle. The nosing is referred to as any cut or additional stone projecting beyond the main surface line of the tablet.

The wash is highly recommended by this monument builder and memorialist. It is the beveled surface on the exposed portion of the upper edge of a monument base. The wash is designed to aid in water run off, but I like it because it looks great. Rock pitch is the common rustic look found on the bottom of the attached sketch. Balance Rock Pitch or Rustic is preferred by monument builders on the bottoms of bases, because it is not as likely to be marred by a weed eater.

If a monument is going to be placed within coping, I recommend minimizing the balance rock pitch, perhaps by using a larger margin. On a 10-inch base, the wash might have a 2-inch drop, defined as the amount of space between the highest and lowest point of the bevel or other parts of a monument. Then, with a 2-inch polished margin, the bottom 6 inches would be balance rock pitch. A monument placed within an area with coping and gravel rock does not need the same protection from weed eaters, lawnmowers, and landscaping equipment.

Now you know the meaning of scotia, nosing, wash, margin, and rock pitch. If you are now ready to enter the monument and memorial business, send me an email. (Smile.)
