The Memorialist: Ask For Feedback and Say Thank You A Lot

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-12

One of my business associates sent me an email recently that stated:

“I appreciate having you as a customer,
And your continued success is important to us.
Please let us know how we can make your buying
experience with (name deleted) a better one.”
“Your input is key to helping us identify
new levels of service and product offerings.
Thank you for your on going business!”

I think it is always good to say “Thank you” to my clients for their business, for they are the reason we are successful in business. Too many businesses think the customer is there to serve their needs, when it is the customer who decides whether our business succeeds or fails. Our sole purpose in business is to serve our customers for a profit.

Just as I did when I was a professor, I invite feedback on my performance. I have observed too many professors and businesses alike who were afraid of what they might learn if they asked for feedback, so they did not ask. This is wrong! Students and clients are constantly evaluating your performance, so even though you may not be hearing the assessment, you are still receiving an evaluation. If you care about your business, my advice is to ask your customers their opinions.

All businesses should constantly be seeking to “identify new level[s] of service and product offerings,” and to say “Thank you” to our clients. On an ongoing basis, I express my thanks to my clients. Likewise, I try to say “Thank you” to my employees each day for their outstanding service to our clients. We are only as strong as the weakest link. Ask for feedback, and say “Thank you” a lot, and you will get ahead in business and in life. After all, it is the right thing to do!
