The Memorialist: Polished and Steeled Finishes in Combination

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-12

The combination of polished and steeled finishes is very attractive on the McNeel’s horizontal monument, the Krueger, and is found on page 83 of McNeel’s “The Greatest Name in Stonecraft.” This monument appeals to me.

Option A

4-0 x 0-8 x 2-4 Die
5-0 x 1-4 x 0-8 Base

Option B

Option C

5-0 x 0-10 x 2-10 Die
6-6 x 1-6 x 0-8 Base

McNeel presented three options with the horizontal tablet lengths of 4 feet, 4 feet six inches, and 5 feet. The heights range from 3 feet to 3 feet 6 inches. As with all horizontal tablets, the length is longer than the height.

McNeel’s proposed tablet widths were either 14 or 16 inches. You will note that the length of the base allows for 9 inches on each end for options A and B, with 10 inches on the largest option. Proportions for length, width, and height change as monument sizes change.

Stylistically, the Krueger has a flat top, pencil round corners, and straight sides with a round. The base has a polished flat top with steeled sides. The polished top of the base blends beautifully with the tablet area right above it, while the sides of the base pull together the steeled finish at the top. The steeled finish is applied to granite by grinding the stone with crushed steel, or by going over the surface of the stone with the abrasives from a sandblaster.

McNeel describes the symbolism of the Krueger horizontal monuments as: “Lilies, representing ‘purity,’ the lamp representing the Resurrection, and the ‘Word of God, Truth, (and) Enlightenment.’” Wilted lilies pointing downward are commonly used to represent death. Typically, the lily represents purity, innocence and bliss. It is the symbol of Easter. It has been found on the ruins of monuments and buildings in civilizations that predate the birth of Christ.
