Close your eyes for a moment. Do you remember that serene moment when the sun basked against your skin? Do you remember the sounds that filled the air? Leaves moving with the wind brushing against the air. Squirrels at play. Perhaps a crow or a mocking bird or blue jay announcing their presence. How about the feeling of the sun and the wind against your skin? Can you hear the sounds of the surf, and smell the salty air? These are all memories.
Do you recall that vacation that was extra special? Perhaps it was the romance, the change of atmosphere, or the opportunity for quite times with a loved one, or the entire family.
What are memories, but thoughts suspended in the subconscious, or time. Real for the moment, and powerful in visual imagery. Yes, memories are all of those things to each of us.
Memorialization is a lot like that! It is indeed metaphoric to those commemorative experiences. Reflections upon the past with remembrances that are real and vital to every human existence. Those are the spices that separate us from the unfeeling, the uncared for, the unconscious.
Yes, the purpose of an excellent memorial is to bring you back to that state of hyper- sensitivity, to remind you of those feelings, and to give you inspiration to live on and live strong for today and the tomorrows to come.
That is the essence of memorialization, and that is what we seek to achieve for our clients and for those, generations from now, who visit the graves of our loved ones. Memories are powerful, as they stir emotions and passions and inspire us to survive in this short existence we call “life.”
Celebrate memories and you will be a stronger person. As a memorialist, we should constantly be striving to help our clients remember those emotions in a manner that is constructive, healing, and progressive. Memories!
