The Memorialist: Memorializing Infants

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-12

The loss of a child or infant must be one of the worst tragedies for a family. In my own family, my grandmother, Ethel Mobley Fletcher lost her son, Franklin. I was informed that she blamed my father for his younger brother’s death, and he was doubly traumatized by the loss of his baby brother.

So, what do you do to memorialize a child? There are many symbols that remind us of children. Angels, cherubs, butterflies, lambs, school emblems including a school bus, crayons, alphabet blocks, Teddy Bears, and the like. Balls, puppies, and kittens also come to mind.

Many families have ledgers, sometimes called “slabs” by our clients, which serve as grave covers. If a ledger is used, I recommend that it be small. Adult-sized ledgers would be inappropriate. Adult-sized monuments are out of place for children, and should be avoided.

We offer the designs shown in the following size in beautiful Hulia White. Typical pricing is indicated. Typical prices include lettering, date or dates and a short epitaph, and shipping.
