McNeel’s “The Greatest Name In Stonecraft” has a section for horizontal monuments. On page 57 of this classic treatise, there is an illustrated memorial for the Chandler family.
The Montgomery Memorial Summarized:
Tablet Top With Round Top, Ogee Mold With Pencil Rounds
The Chandler has a round top on the tablet, with an ogee molding as the top approaches each end, with pencil rounds on each end of the top of the tablet. The tablet is a vertical monument, as it is taller than it is wide.
Concave Sides with Scotia and Nosing
The sides of the memorial are concave, in that they curve inward like the inner surface of a circle, a bowl or a sphere. The antonym of concave is convex, which is curved outward, or rounded to follow the outside line of a circle.
The bottom edges of each side of the tablet have a scotia. A scotia is a deep concave molding used especially on the base of tablets or columns. The scotia flows into a pencil round that turns downward into the nosing, or the bottom molding that extends outward from the side and rests upon the base of the memorial. Technically, as used in architecture, nosing is the projecting edge of molding.
Rounds are gradual wide curvatures that are curved, rather tan square or angular, on the corners of the molding. Pencil rounds make the turn from horizontal to vertical in the width of a pencil.
Base: Ogee (Round and Scotia Combination)
The base is interesting with its ogee molding feature. Technically, an ogee has a round that flows into a scotia. The opposite of an ogee is a reverse ogee, which has a scotia that flows into a round. I like the creativity of an ogee molding for the base of memorials. Too little imagination is demonstrated by the use of a flat top on a base.
The edges of the base appear to have pencil rounds that flow better with the ogee than would sharp corners.
McNeel identifies the dimensions of the Chandler design as follows:
McNeel provided three recommended size options for the Chandler.

Monument Dimensions Explained
McNeel’s suggested dimensions for the tablet are as follows:
Option A above is the smallest size shown as, it is 4 feet long, 8 inches wide, 2 feet tall, with the base 5 foot 4 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 8 inches tall. Options B offers a 5 foot long tablet, 8 inches wide by 2 feet 2 inches tall. With the base being 6 feet by 1 foot 4 inches wide by 6 inches tall. Option C is 10 inches longer, 2 inches wider, and 6 inches taller, with a 7 foot long base that is 20 inches wide and 10 inches tall. As with all designs, you can scale the basic design for the monument larger or smaller proportionally as your needs may require.
McNeel’s Comments on Symbolism
McNeel describes the symbolism for the Clark design stating that the ivy represents faithfulness and memory.
Final Comments
This attractive memorial has sandblast sunk lettering for the family name. The carved ivy is raised and it flows parallel above the curved panel, accenting the molding very well. The Chandler is a unique design that harmonizes well and would be a fine heirloom memorial for any family.
