Douglas Peterson Maitland
Dec. 31, 1954 – Nov. 2, 2005
Doug grew up in Crewe, Virginia, graduating from Nottoway High School. His best friend was his cousin, Mike Daulton, and James Vaughn. Doug loved to tell stories about his boyhood antics.
He moved to Hampton Virginia where he married and had two children. He was hired at Virginia Power Electrical Company and moved up from Lineman to supervisor during a 30 year career history.
Doug enjoyed softball as a member of the company team winning many tournaments. He loved old cars that he would repair and transform into hot rods. He loved to have a good time. He was an avid hunter always looking forward to hunting season. He was like a kid in a candy store when it came to shopping for new hunting clothes and supplies. I loved to watch him. He lived in the moment. He never met a person that he did not know and he could talk to anyone. He would make a stranger his friend within minutes of meeting, always remembering their names and faces. He was liked and loved by many!
In 1987, Doug and his family moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where he was taking on a new position with Virginia Power. He moved into the area not knowing anyone. We met in 1990. He was a tall, dark skin, handsome man. We dated for two years and then married December 21, 1992 combining our families into one. He loved my children as if they were his own. He cared for me like I was a queen. There was nothing he would not do for me. He made me feel special. I miss him greatly.
Doug’s favorite time of year was the month of December, the month we married and his birthday. We always had a wonderful time during December. Doug and I were baptized together at North Side Baptist church in Charlottesville. This is when I knew we were going to be together forever!
He was a man of great honesty and loyalty to his friends, family and religion.
In 1994, our brother in law, Paul, invited us to Smith Mountain Lake for a visit. We went and Doug fell in love with the place. We bought a boat, a computer and Doug found himself a new best friend. Doug and Paul called each other every other day. They could not go through the week without calling each other. We traveled to the lake every weekend, a 3-hour drive. Dough would drop the boat in and he would totally relax. He would party hard and I loved to watch him. Our place at the lake is right next door to each other and they loved being able to walk out one door and into the other. We had many great times together. I am missing Doug and all the great times we were going to have together.
Doug was the son of Lucy Mae Daulton (b. May 14, 1932, d. March 11, 1998) and Charlie Peterson Maitland, both born in Virginia. He had one half-brother, Steve Johnson, born in Virginia but who lives in Texas. Doug’s children were Season Marie Maitland, Douglas Peterson Maitland Jr, two step children, Kevin Ryan Dunn & Ashley Renae Dunn, and five grandchildren: Christian Alexander Maitland, Kayla Nalani Maitland, Skylar Brook Doreman, Austin Douglas Maitland and Jackson Westmoreland Land.
