When I think of the word “harmony,” I am flooded with thoughts on how often a lack of harmony exists in memorialization. Simply stated, unfortunately, most monuments are flat, dull, unimaginative, lackluster forms of memorialization.
Harmony is one of the qualities of an heirloom memorial. To harmonize is “to bring or come into agreement or harmony.” Listening to an orchestra or musical group in harmony is a delightful experience. The absence of harmony is just noise, painful to the ears and the emotions.
Harmonizing a memorial can be done using all granite of the same color, or a combination of colors, but care must be taken to not cross the threshold into bad tastes.
Memorials can create moving and powerful sensations when done right. Anyone who has ever viewed a military cemetery with row after row of linearly organized monuments can attest to the powerfully moving experience.
A well-planned public memorial is more likely to bring about a compelling and moving experience than the typical family memorial, though it is possible to create a powerful statement with family memorials too. Unfortunately, most families do not invest the time or financial resources required to go beyond ordinary and reach the level of an heirloom memorial.
Regardless of the amount of money that you invest in either your, or a loved one’s memorial, always remember to invest the time into planning a well-harmonized memorial, an arrangement that can significantly upgrade the appearance of any monument.
