By now, my readers have learned a bit of the terminology relating to monument building and memorialization. Today, I write a bit more regarding the surface treatments available, but this time for tile.
HONED This is a smooth finish with a slight sheen, produced by using a polishing head.
FLAMED: The top surface of the slab is burnt off, giving an irregular textured finish.
SANDBLASTED: This finish uses a sawn stone slabs that are coarsely polished. This removes saw marks and leaves a semi-smooth, regular finish.
WATER JET: This is a non-slip matt finish, produced by working the surface of the stone with high-pressure water jets.
The brightest, most vivid color is offered by the polished finish. Next is the honed finish, followed by the flamed and sandblasted finishes. The sandblasted finish is less attractive than polished, honed or flamed, and is the least attractive of the four finishes. When it comes to safety, though, the needs of the application must prevail over appearance, and polished should not be used on a surface area.
