The Memorialist: During Times Of Family Conflict, Seek Peace Though Prayer

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2006-02

There are times within the best of families where family conflict is likely to occur. The memorialization process, heavily affected by the multiple stages of grief, is one of those occasions. I hope the reminders of the following prayers may serve as guidance toward peace, during times of grief and intense emotion:

Serenity Prayer

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.”

St. Francis’ Prayer

“Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”

As an individual, son, brother, friend and memorialist, I pray that I may accept what I cannot change, the courage to change what I can, and that I will know the difference. I pray that I may seek to be an instrument of the Lord’s peace, to sow love and faith, to bestow light and joy, to console, to understand, to love, to give, and to pardon.
