The memorial for the Broadnax family is not the largest memorial in Historic Elmwood Cemetery, by far; however, it is a good example to show multiple features that might be used as you plan your own memorial.
Apex Top
The memorial has a small apex top. I like the apex top, and I used an apex top on my own memorial.
Columns
The use of columns on both sides of the memorial is attractive. Though made from only one large piece of blue-gray granite, the columns were constructed to appear as if they were freestanding and holding up the apex top. The columns have fluting or parallel grooves carved on the sides of the columns. The inner surfaces for the fluting are rounded.
Base With A Wash
The base has a sloped top called a “wash” or a “drop wash” in the monument industry. This is a bevelled surface on the upper portion of the base, designed to assure water runs off. A slanting edge is created with the surface of the base, in an angle other than a right angle with the main surface. The drop is probably 2 inches at most for the wash. A drop is the amount of space between the highest and lowest points
Finish
The face and base of the memorial has aged, but it appears to either be polished or steeled finish. I like the steeled finish for the blue-gray granite that is so common in cemeteries throughout the South.
Pattern or Molding
The memorial has a raised band just below the apex top. A raised band is a raised continuing panel. This is also called a “molding,” either raised or sunken, that is designed to serve as a decoration or a divider. Moldings are created either by carving, sculpturing, or through machining. The band has a decorative molding made up of a series of egg-like figures alternating with other dart, anchor, or tongue-like forms.
Font
The family name is created using round-raised lettering in a panel.
High Relief
The wreath with lettering inside is in high relief.
Summary
I like the Broadnax family memorial. It brings together numerous design elements in an attractive vertical design. While a good cleaning to remove the tree sap is long past due, this memorial is what I would classify as an heirloom memorial that will honor the Broadnax family, generation after generation.
