The Memorialist: Elberton Memorial Honors Public Servants

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-11-10

I think it is terrific when our city, county, state and federal officials honor the folks who keep us all safe. The City of Elberton has a front lawn memorial to honor the police and fire fighters who spend their time protecting us. The memorial that has been erected stands proudly and captures the essence of pride that many of us feel towards our local protectors.

An eagle, with outstretched talons stands in front of an American flag, is highlighted with pigment, creating a colorful portrait that reminds us of our obligations to our country and creates a sense of patriotism.

The sub base has the phrase “God Bless America” beautifully carved, adding to the memorial’s presence. “In Memory & In Honor Of Those Who Serve And Protect Our Great Country” is carved on the base. Both statements are good reminders for all citizens. Values are reinforced through our memorials that serve to honor these public servants and to remind us of the sacrifices of them.

With a polished face and back for the memorial with rustic top and sides, this is a harmoniously designed memorial. The sub base and base have rounded ends and each is textured with polished letters. The texture is probably steeled (sometimes called frosted or sanded finish), or stippled with a sandblasting technique (that is sometimes called textured, matt finished), or is hammered and pebbled. The same granite has a dramatically different appearance when created through different stone carving techniques.

The next time you see a police officer, firefighter, member of the armed forces or a veteran, thank them for their service.
