The Memorialist: Donor Recognition and Memorial Rock

Unknown to many folks, monument and memorial companies are not limited to the design and construction of monuments and memorials in cemeteries. Businesses, charities, public institutions, and homeowners are the recipients of our services as well.

The increasing use of memorialization in golf courses, parks, resorts, universities, museums, residencies, corporate campuses, historical buildings, zoos, libraries, nature trails, fundraising campaign “Donor Trails” or even for private use, have been the latest trends.

Clients are always looking for new ways to recognize donors with quality bronze plaques. One method, apart from a building or a bench, is the mounting of a bronze plaque on a boulder. Since a real boulder weighing hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds for that purpose is normally expensive, time consuming, and a logistically demanding task, a more practical answer is the use of a replicated recognition rock, which serves as a beautiful outdoor landscape accent while showcasing plaques and signage up to 11" x 8 1/2" in size.

One company that made contact with me recently is Mills Manufacturing, based in Muskegon, Michigan, a wholesaler for very attractive, and high-quality, artificial memorial rocks. Mills assures me that their “rocks will stand the test of time.”

Mills’ unique back-to-nature products are accurately molded from real rocks, manufactured from construction grade cast stone designed to withstand 9,000 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure and freeze-thaw conditions, are guaranteed for a lifetime, and can be ordered in your choice of 3 colors. Mills offers three color choices of Sandstone, Slate Gray (popular in the Midwest and East Coast), or Red Rock.

The rugged castings are hollow, approximately one inch thick, open at the bottom, and feature an anti-theft eye bolt system and hand chiseled recess for a bronze plaque up to 11" x 8 1/2" in size, for 8 of the 20 models.

They weigh between 80-100 lbs. (but are exact replicas of rocks that would normally weigh 500-1,000 lbs.) and are shipped to your doorstep via FedEx Ground in 350-lb. test, double-walled, corrugated boxes using a special foam-in-place packaging system.
