The Memorialist: Marking Cemetery Plot Boundaries With Coping and Posts

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-12

Cemetery plot boundaries are often marked with marble or granite borders and corner posts as two decorative features that can significantly upgrade a burial site.

‘Coping’ is the term memorialists use within the profession to describe the low marble or granite border commonly seen, with or without posts, around cemetery plots. Posts may be used either with coping or alone.

McNeel’s classic treatise “The Greatest Name in Stonecraft” shows several of the many options that are available to the memorialist for cemetery plot boundaries and corner posts.

Personally, I would like to see more carving on coping, as well as ornamental design work including margins, washes, pencil rounds, beads, scotia, reeds and flutes. Please read my other articles online, visit our website, or contact us for a personal consultation on the options available.

Just as there are numerous colors of granite to choose from, coping comes in a wide variation of widths and height. My recommendation is to keep proportion in mind. The largest coping should not be used for a small family plot; just as small coping would not have the maximum attractiveness for a large plot.

Common Sizes For Coping And Corner Posts Are:
Coping Corner Posts
Length x Width Length x Width x Height
0- 4 x 0- 6
0- 6 x 0- 6
0- 6 x 0- 8
0- 6 x 0-10
0- 8 x 0- 6
0- 8 x 0-10
0- 8 x 1- 0
0-10 x 0- 8
0-10 x 0-10
0-10 x 1-10
0-6 x 0-6 x 0- 6
0-8 x 0-8 x 0- 8
0-8 x 0-8 x 0- 6
0-8 x 0-8 x 0- 8

Again, these are only common sizes, and modifications from these sizes are common.

As I said, corner posts may be used with or without coping, and vice versa. Engraving on the tops and sides of the coping or posts is a readily accepted option to help you tell a personal or family story.

Just as the width and height varies, a full range of finishes is also available, including polished, steeled, sawn, and balanced rock pitch. For maximum long-term satisfaction, spend time with your monument builder or memorialist, and plan your memorial needs with a professional.
