The Memorialist: Community Service With Professional Expertise

Author: Burton Fletcher
Publication Date: 2005-12

What are our expectations for the monument industry for organized community service that promotes the professionalism and compassion of our trade? This is a question for which I do not have an easy answer; however, I have a couple of suggestions.

Share Your Expertise: What resources and expertise do we have as an industry that is lacking in the general public? Hmmmmm. Equipment and monument restoration and cleaning expertise come to mind. Also, we have expertise in cemetery maintenance and marker reconstruction, and the necessary tools and equipment to trim trees, cut shrubs, trim around monuments, cut grass, and the like.

Old Cemeteries Need Our Assistance: Many old cemeteries, whether segregated or not, have been neglected or abandoned, and they could use our assistance. This is especially true for old Black cemeteries that were founded during an era of racism, when folks of color were not allowed to be buried in the same cemetery as Caucasians. Old markers and headstones often need cleaning. We have the tools, and we should have the expertise, to give counsel and to oversee proper cleaning of these historic relics.

Partnering With Others: I recommend that you donate the services of your company to these abandoned cemeteries for one day each year. The donation of our time and expertise is not enough. I believe we should also organize events so the public can donate to the cause. Other organizations that may have energetic volunteers, but lack expertise, may wish to partner with our industry for a win-win community service project. Boy Scouts, fraternities, and civic organizations may wish to join with us if we are willing to share the recognition with them. If we lead, they will follow.

Press Releases: When we perform good deeds as a company, or as an industry, we should receive recognition for our contributions. A well-written press release with digital photos will go a long way towards persuading your local paper to publish an article that recognizes you, your company, your organization, and our industry for your commitment to “give something back.”

Make A Personal Commitment: Our company is committed to donating at least 20 man hours each year to uncompensated cemetery restoration. I hope you will make the same commitment.
