One option that we offer our clients is the alternative to tint the concrete foundation to more closely complement, dare I say “harmonize,” the foundation color with that of the granite we use to build the memorial. The attached photo shows a freshly poured concrete foundation that we tinted black. After a proper time for curing, we will install a beautiful black granite memorial to memorialize our client’s son.
We believe tinting is a good alternative that adds significantly to the appearance of the memorial, especially when foundation is above ground level, as we now recommend to our clients in southern climates where there is minimal danger from freezing weather.
A foundation that is 1 or 2 inches above the ground level diverts water around the memorial to better protect the life of the memorial. It is also our recommendation that a foundation should be 3-4 inches wider than the base of the monument on the front, back and ends of the memorial. By providing this extra protection from weed eaters and lawn mowers we are adding significantly to the long-term enjoyment of the memorial.
Building a thoughtful monument foundation is a good thing! The little things are what differentiate a good memorial(ist) from an outstanding memorial(ist). We hope our memorials and our work fall in the later category.
