Special porcelain photos are
commonly placed on monuments these days. Be advised that these photos come in a wide range
of quality based on the manufacturer. Ask to see samples from a reputable monument
business before purchasing. A good porcelain photo is thin, high in ultraviolet
protection, and true in color and appearance to the original photo.
Why are thin photos better? First, if the photo is surface mounted, a thin photo creates a
lower profile for a sleeker look. Second, if the photo is flush mounted (recommended),
then a thin photo requires less sandblasting to recess the area (the less sandblasting,
the cheaper the labor). Flush-mounted photos assure the sleekest appearance and the
strongest bond.
Ultraviolet protection is another important factor. It helps the photo resist fading and
deterioration over time.
Also, make sure that you purchase a porcelain photo with a metal back for proper mounting
and durability. Finally, get a suitable guarantee from the manufacturer or the monument
business.
When submitting photos, a larger photo usually provides higher resolution. Though computer
programs can improve photos, a loss of detail and quality often occurs when enlarging
small photos.
Some clients prefer photos of themselves at a younger age. I say, Whatever makes you
happy. Its your memorial, so you should present yourself as you would like to
be remembered. A collage of photos showing pictures throughout your life may work too.
My best advice is to make a preneed purchase of your memorial. That way, you ensure the
use of your favorite photo and design your own memorial with our assistance. Or, leave
specific instructions in your will for a fitting memorial. In any case, theres
nothing like a photo to remember you by.
