Carvings
Because memorials have limited space to express a person’s essence, stone carvings are invaluable for adding meaning and style. At ValdostaMemorials.com, our designs are unique, so you have an unlimited choice of carvings. Below are some examples with their symbolism. There are various.

Celtic Cross: Modern—unity of heaven and earth;

  pagan — fertility and life.

Cross: Christ and His suffering.

Crown: Heavenly reward.

Daffodil: Beauty, deep regard.

Daisy: Christ’s innocence, youth, Sun of

  Righteousness.
Hands: Greeting, farewell, everlasting union.

Iris: Eloquence, a message, protection.

Lily of the Valley: Advent of Christ, purity, humility.

Narcissus: Triumph of divine love, sacrifice,

  eternal life over death, selfishness, sin.

Oak leaf: Strength, solidarity, endurance, faith

  and virtue against adversity.
Pansy: Remembrance, meditation.

Carving Methods

In shaped carving, the image is sunk into the stone, and its elements are tapered and relieved to achieve a realistic appearance. Flat carving is a simpler method that goes below the surface but isn’t as deep as shaped carving. Flat carving does not employ tapering and relieving. Etching is a more modern method. It is usually done with an automated laser or by hand with a vibrating diamond-tipped etcher. With etching, the polished stone’s finish is cracked by extreme heat, creating a high-contrast image, especially when black stone is used. Etched images are on the surface level of the memorial and can be highly detailed, almost photograph-quality. With Bas-relief carving, the image projects slightly from the stone. The projection (depth) in bas-relief carving is usually disproportionately flat.

There are a wide variety of emblems which can be engraved.
